BEGOTTEN COMES TO ANYWHERE FESTIVAL

Brisbane Stage

Acclaimed independent Brisbane company Minola Theatre returns to Anywhere Festival in 2021, following their Highly Commended production of Mary Anne Butler’s Highway of Lost Hearts in the 2019 festival. This year’s offering is Begotten: an original drama written and performed by award-winning playwright Bianca Butler Reynolds, and directed by Minola Theatre co-founder Kat Dekker.

Begotten, which tells the story of a family through the eyes of five generations of women, sees Butler Reynolds transform from cynical millennial Alice to paranoid 90s housewife Eileen, vengeful Vietnam War-era Clea, disillusioned World War II migrant Hazel, and — finally — wild, earthy and mysteriously ‘gifted’ Irish matriarch Laoise. Played to an intimate, in-the-round audience, this 90-minute drama transports its viewers through time and space, exploring motherhood, sanity, war, loss, revenge, love and the indelible imprint of family legacy.

Begotten was previously released by Minola Theatre as an audio drama during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown. It was subsequently performed by a cast of five at the inaugural Wynnum Fringe in November 2020, playing to a sold-out audience and garnering high praise from viewers. In the 2021 Anywhere Festival, Minola Theatre realise their original vision for Begotten as a one-woman work. It plays for five performances only, across venues in Brisbane, Ipswich and Moreton Bay.
