CUPBOARD REVEALS HILARIOUS CHARACTERS

August 12, 2017

‘Better than headline acts at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival’ was the sentiment expressed by the person sitting next to me during the show Get in the Cupboard! at Bris Funny Fest.

I haven’t been to the world’s most famous fringe festival, but the Bris Funny Fest — now in its second year — certainly has a lot to offer audiences who love raw, original, and affordable comedy shows; and if Get in the Cupboard! is anything to go by, it would seem the festival is a platform for extremely gifted, yet-to-be-discovered talent.

This clever show is full of surprises from the moment the audience is ushered into the theatre, which is actually an oversized walk-in-wardrobe at a funky bar in Woolloongabba. Starring a female cast of two, Rosa Sottile and Taylor Edwards play two main characters in their late 70s who are about to move into a quiet retirement village, yet paradoxically they are full of life, vivid memories, and can still boogie up a storm.

Their memories are woven into clever sketches that feature colourful characters like Plump Pam the Psychic who has revealing prophetic skills, a carolling rodent, a non-verbal character with a relatable anxiety disorder, and more.

It’s not just the original material, colourful characters, and the unique theatre setting that make this show hilarious; these two Brisbane artists have impeccable comic timing and I personally can’t wait to see what they do next.

Get in the Cupboard! has another showing at the Bris Funny Fest at 7pm on Thursday, 17 August 2017. Tickets are $15 and includes a drink on arrival.

The 2017 Bris Funny Fest runs from August 2—20, 2017.
